The girl’s mother, speaking anonymously to protect their identity, shared that she believed Roblox was a safe space exclusively for children. However, her daughter was lured off the platform by a predator who used the game to initiate contact before moving to external apps like Discord. Through these apps, the predator sent explicit messages and media.

"There was one character on Roblox that looked really trendy, which then asked her to download an app called Discord," the mother explained. "That's where he sent videos, photos, and said disgusting things."

While the girl is reluctant to discuss the incident, her mother emphasizes the importance of parental vigilance. "I was naive," she admitted.

Roblox's Response to Safety Concerns
Roblox has implemented new safety measures to address such risks. Players under 13 are now restricted from communicating with others outside of mini-games, and parents can manage their child’s friend list remotely.

"We use AI and automation to review content and have thousands of moderators worldwide," said Matt Kaufman, Roblox's Chief Safety Officer.

However, critics argue these measures are insufficient. Children under 13 can still interact with others within games, which online safety advocates like Kirra Pendergast, founder of Safe on Social, believe poses risks.

Pendergast has presented at over 800 schools and frequently addresses Roblox in her online safety talks. "They need to acknowledge they are more than just a game," she argued.

The Australian government recently passed legislation banning social media for children under 16, but gaming platforms like Roblox are not included. Advocates are urging stricter regulations and more robust moderation to protect young users.
